Table wasn't checked and cleared for any plates/dishes that were finished, no one asked if we were okay, if we wanted another drink, nothing. My inner basic bitch was practically screaming. We started off with a lovely bottle of rose (the clearer the better) gone are the days of drinking pints of blossom hill! My scallop shumai was okay, I’ve have many better shumais and it doesn’t help that one of the best I’ve had was next door in Yauatcha. From this point onwards, that was the end of the service.
I’ll happily go back to the restaurant too, because the small chow and dim sum dishes were really good and the restaurant is perfect for large groups.
I am not one to be a snob, but if you are adding service charge to my bill, what service am I paying for here exactly?
Upstairs houses the main menu. There are notes on the family farm the happy animals come from. As you’d expect, we only care for the restaurant. Lucky ducks. Respect, then, to Marco Pierre White who has decided to tell his customers exactly when he’s there. The rice is another matter. There are starker comparisons.
Across two meals I try some very good things, many of them taking banal Chinese takeaway standards and turning them into serious conversation pieces. Firstly the decor is impressive, dark and modern.
As well as a whole host of beers, cocktails and over ten teas to choose from, you’re guaranteed to find a tipple to tickle your fancy.
3rd visit - great menu although we wonder if it was changed recently. This stretch of London’s Berwick Street has never been one of Soho’s loveliest.
Cons – Duck slices were thin. They are also 90p more expensive than at Yauatcha next door. Imagine someone had gifted you a kilo of prime Spanish ham and you’d grown bored of eating the stuff. Bear even sampled her first ever piece of duck and as you can probably tell by her expression, she thought all her Christmases had come at once. It got so bad that other customers in the restaurant began to help us get the servers attention.
One ornou favourite places. The menu here is based around sharing and social eating.
For the mains - cashew chicken was tasty but had more skin fat than chicken so my friend couldn’t eat most of it and noodles were very good. Oh my goodness – is there anything better than duck and pancakes with lashings of plum sauce?? Some customers complain about chefs having their name above the door but not actually being on site all the time. (Greens with black bean sauce and mackerel are similarly thrilling.) Having visited a few months previously and knowing the quality of food, I was more than ready to see what was quacking! We weren’t keen on dessert … I can’t remember exactly why now cos we didn’t even bother looking at the menu, but we just gave it a pass. My jasmine smoked pork ribs looked delicious and I was so excited to tuck in, but it wasn’t near as delicious as it looked. The prawn sesame toast is the best I have ever tried, the butch minced prawn heaped so pillowlike on to the toast you don’t know whether to eat it or have a nap on it. The numbing peppercorns are a little overwhelming – my lips were vibrating – but it’s still a good version. But Duck & Rice is a gem, Last modified on Tue 9 Jul 2019 05.38 EDT, 90 Berwick Street, London W1 (020 3327 7888). Price:-OK. Free Shipping & Up More.

But I was pleasantly surprised that although it was a busy Saturday night, we were given a large table in the centre of the restaurant and little Bear the influencer, was given her own damn chair. Firstly the decor is impressive, dark and modern. Always a great evening and good drinks.
Downstairs there is indeed a thrilling list of ales and pilsners, stouts and porters, wheat and fruit beers. Drinks: James Squire-friendly tap and bottled beers, orientalist cocktails (Guandong Spritz, Temple of Tranquility), five tap wines and a broad-church wine list with a focus on riesling and pinot noir. We were lucky enough to be invited along to review The Duck and Rice for dinner with Bear. I visited as part of a large group a few months ago and the attention to detail and quality of the food was exactly the same as when we dined as a three. – Delicious duck rice – Tasty braised pork – Herbal soup was refreshing – Affordable prices – Generous portions.
Yauatcha both lifted the quality of dim sum in London, and made eating Chinese food sexy and glamorous, as did Hakkasan. 90 Berwick St, Soho, London W1F 0QB We ordered the House and the Crispy Duck and both were delicious. For all the brass front it’s a reasonable claim.
The Duck and Rice is also moderately priced.
Yauatcha is right next door, similar price range (maybe a bit more expensive) but WORTH spending the money in there.
