The Osaka-based udon chain, known for humongous bowls and a vast selection of broths, sauces and toppings arrived in Waikiki by way of New York, where its first international location served as the testing ground for their westward expansion. It wasn’t seasoned at all, and beef tasted a bit off. TsuruTonTan makes its udon fresh in-house daily using a carefully selected blend of flour from Japan. But, I’m not sure if they had this deal when we first went, or if we went after their specified “lunch” time (or perhaps our waiter didn’t give us the right menu?) There were no other toppings inside of the soup except for some onions, so it would be nice if there were some other vegetables thrown in (perhaps mushrooms?). Tsurutontan is located in the Royal Hawaiian Center. However, if you’re looking for something of higher quality and don’t need the large portions, then you may want to look elsewhere. However, it was quite pricey (more than twice the price of Marukame at around $15 or so each–plus tip equaling almost $40 for the two of us, which is almost triple what we’d spend at Marukame) and that coupled with the disappointing service had us not feeling the need to return since.
