The day came and I arrived at the entrance to the Highwood. Mule deer are often spotted, and, if you’re lucky, moose, grizzlies and black bears as well. Look and listen for bears and their signs. There had been whispers of electric road bikes for years, but they remained a rarity which, in the minds of many road cyclists, was a good thing. I often walk the old dry riverbeds and search through log jams for pieces of wood to use as bases for my bird carvings. It climbs to 2,206 metres and is the highest paved road in Canada. Make plenty of noise and travel in group. It is well worth the experience as a planned day outing or as part of the drive to your destination. There are 12 kms of paved trails for bicyclists to enjoy as well as several more challenging trails for mountain bikers. The only thing that marked this as a pedal-assist e-bike was a wide downtube that housed the battery. I’ve fished it from the deep canyon, five kilometres west of Longview, to about 30 kilometres upstream. Travelling through the park and leaving Kananaskis Lakes, the highway climbs through the valley created by Pocaterra Creek—named after George Pocaterra, who, decades ago, was a guide, hunter and prospector in this area. The bike crackled beneath me. But there I was on Monday morning at work, showing off photos on my phone and issuing my report to co-workers: there was snow at the summit. Fat finds the cracks in your fitness routine – a minor injury, work travel that keeps you sedentary, offseason, or even in-season procrastination. There was no more snow on the road all the way to the top and as far as I could see down the south side. I have travelled this road several times and am always in awe of the impressive tectonic forces that developed the Rockies. When an invitation for the first big ride of the season lands in your inbox, those heretofore unnoticed 15 lb are suddenly drawing attention to themselves like a Kardashian. From that junction, the highway begins to follow the wide valley created by the Highwood River (shown here). Just a very small amount of (1 cm deep) slush in a few places, easily avoidable. Passionate about wildlife photography? Anyone cycling highwood pass yet? I know of one woman who had her hip broken when a cow elk attacked her with its hooves when she got too close to the elk’s calf. The Highwood River originates in the pass. Elk with calves can also be dangerous when getting too close for a picture. I fill-up in Longview or prior to exiting the Trans-Canada Highway. I live in High River and appreciate the work done to restore the town and much of the valley damage since the flood. I’ve hiked and fished in the Rockies and had only one run-in with a grizzly while fishing—none while hiking. In the foothills and valley, evidence of the flooding can be observe with new river channels, washed-out picnic areas, and log jams. From the centre, you can follow Highway 40 as it winds through Kananaskis Country and Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. The Highwood Pass rewards the adventurous with one of the most varied and picturesque drives in Canada. That was my pre-ride with the Cube the day before the pass, only without the punishment before-hand. Went up on Saturday morning from the north side. I have seen several species and especially enjoy observing the ravens that patrol the highway. It’s probably doable right to the summit by now. The pass is closed each year from December to June 15 to protect wildlife. I saw several ewes and kids on my last drive, but I seldom see rams.
